Advantages

Advantages. They do things. They cost XP, noted by their cost. Their effects are passive, unless noted otherwise.

All advantages bear a tag appropriate to their category: [Physical], [Mental], [Social], [Blood], [Spiritual], or [Divine]. They may also bear additional tags.

Some advantages have a cost of X. When buying these advantage, you choose the value for X.

Some advantages have multiple costs (ex: 3/6/9). The advantage will have a different description for each cost.

The minimum cost of an advantage is 1, no matter the type or magnitude of any discounts that apply.

You may purchase most advantages after character creation. In the case of an advantage with multiple costs (or an X cost), you may spend an appropriate amount of XP to increase the rank or X of that advantage.

Anatomy of an Advantage
Name - This is the advantages name, which may be referenced by other effects, be they techniques or other advantages.
Extra Tags - Some advantages have more than their category tag, those will be noted in this spot when they are present.
Cost - The cost of an advantage, in XP. This may be a single number, a set of numbers, or an X, as noted above.
Description - The description of the advantage, which hints at its in-setting nature, and its mechanics. Not all cases an advantage can be applies can be explicitly stated, however, so your GM is the final arbiter of any such fuzzy cases. If the scope of an advantage is unclear, see the FAQ for some clarification.
Discounts - Some advantages cost less for certain types of characters. They will be noted below the main effect. All discounts stack, but as mentioned previously, the minimum cost of an advantage is 1.

Special Tags and mechanical baggage
[Blood] - Your character was born with this ability, and therefore this advantage can only be taken at character creation
[Spiritual] - Characters may possess only one [Spiritual] advantage or disadvantage.
[Divine] - Characters may possess only one [Divine] advantage or disadvantage.
[Starting] - Advantages with this tag may only be taken at character creation.
[Heritage] - Not all spirits dwell apart from mankind, and of those that involve themselves in human affairs, some take a more carnal interest than others. Your family line is the product of such a union, and the blood of a particular spirit flows especially strong in your veins, for good or for ill. You may never have a an advantage and disadvantage of this type from more than one spirit.

Physical Advantages

Bland

Cost: 2
Something about you makes you forgettable. You may lack a distinct physical description, or it's an active attempt on your part to blend with the crowd. Whenever you are the target of a Lore: Bushido or a Lore: Heraldry test to determine your Honor or identity, you may choose to add 10 to the Target Number of that test.

Dangerous Beauty

Cost: 3
Not only are you physically attractive, but you know how to leverage your looks in just the right way. When testing or contesting Coercion(Bribery) against a character who is attracted to your sex, gain +1k0.

When buying this advantage, Musankumo characters gain a discount of 1.

Hands of Stone

Cost: 6
Through extreme training, your limbs have become as deadly as any instrument of war. Your Unarmed damage is increased by +1k1

When buying this advantage, Sohei gain a discount of 1.

Large

[Starting]
Cost: 4
Not only are you tall and broad, you also know how to use your weight. When dealing damage with a [Large] [Melee] weapon, gain +1k0.

When buying this advantage, Akaishi characters gain a discount of 1.

Quick

Cost: 6
You always seem to be just one step ahead of the competition. Gain +1k0 to initiative rolls. At the start of each Readying Phase, you may gain +X to your Initiative, where X is your Reflex Value.

Steady

Cost: 4
You have trained to keep your composure, even when wounded. Reduce all Wound Penalties you suffer by 3.

When buying this advantage, Bushi characters gain a discount of 1.

Vigilant

Cost: 3
Tricked one too many times, even if it was only once, you've tempered trust and courtesy with a healthy dose of skepticism. Gain +5 Vigilance.

When buying this advantage, Miyabito characters gain a discount of 1.

Wary

Cost: 3
For better or for worse, you've been conditioned to be a bit jumpy. You always contest with Investigation(Senses) rather than your Vigilance when being ambushed. When contesting Investigation(Senses) against another character's Stealth(Ambush), gain +1k1.

Mental Advantages

Absolute Direction

Cost: 1
You have an unfailing sense of direction, and can always determine which direction is North. This Advantage has no effect within the Bloodmire.

Clear Thinker

Cost: 3
All the practice in the world can't prepare you for everything, so a quick mind can provide the edge you need. When another character's actions would try to confuse, deceive, or manipulate you, gain +1k0 to any contests to resist their actions.

When buying this advantage, Shuhōken characters gain a discount of 1.

Daredevil

Cost: 3
Thrillseekers get a rush out of danger, and their senses heighten in response to that peril - as long as it lets them show off, that is. When you Boost an Athletics test or contest, gain +3k1 instead of +1k1.

When buying this advantage, Clan of Spice and Clan of Gales characters gain a discount of 1.

Inner Calm

Cost: 2
When you would add your Honor to the total of any test or contest made to resist Bribery, Fear, or Intimidation, gain an additional +1k0.

Heart of Vengeance

Cost: 3/5/7/9
In your soul burns an undying hatred - a hatred which you have learned to utilize well. When you gain this Advantage, choose one faction— a Clan or similar organization, for example.

3 - Up to 2 times per session, you may gain +1k1 to any test or contest made against a member of that faction.
5 - Up to 3 times per session, you may gain +1k1 to any test or contest made against a member of that faction.
7 - Up to 5 times per session, you may gain +1k1 to any test or contest made against a member of that faction.
9 - Gain +1k1 to any test or contest made against a member of that faction.

Lip Reading

Cost: 4
Not all techniques are taught by a single dojo. When you can see a character's lips while they are speaking you may test Perception against Target Number X, where X is 15 + 5 * every 20 ft. you are away from your target. If you succeed, you may understand what they're saying so long as they remain visible to you. (This test must be made once for each character)

Paragon of Bushido - Chuugi

Cost: 7
You have closely aligned yourself with the virtue of Duty. Whenever you gain honor from an act associated with Chuugi, gain +0.1 additional honor. When making a test or contest, you may spend a Void Point. If you do, negate and ignore all maluses and penalties you suffer to that test or contest.

When purchasing this advantage, Hōkiba characters gain a discount of 1.

Paragon of Bushido - Gi

Cost: 7
You have closely aligned yourself with the virtue of Truth and Justice. Whenever you gain honor from an act associated with Gi, gain +0.1 additional honor. When testing or contesting Sincerity(Honesty), gain +1k1.

When purchasing this advantage, Hōkiba characters gain a discount of 1.

Paragon of Bushido - Jin

Cost: 7
You have closely aligned yourself with the virtue of Compassion. Whenever you gain honor from an act associated with Jin, gain +0.1 additional honor. Whenever you Boost any test or contest made to protect or assist characters of a lower social caste, gain +1k1 (this stacks).

When purchasing this advantage, Hōkiba characters gain a discount of 1.

Paragon of Bushido - Makoto

Cost: 7
You have closely aligned yourself with the virtue of Integrity. Whenever you gain honor from an act associated with Makoto, gain +0.1 additional honor. Whenever you overcome some ordeal to keep your word, and your word is kept, you may recover a Void Point.

When purchasing this advantage, Hōkiba characters gain a discount of 1.

Paragon of Bushido - Meiyo

Cost: 7
You have closely aligned yourself with the virtue of Honor and Pride. Whenever you gain honor from an act associated with Meiyo, gain +0.1 additional honor. When making a non-attack test or contest, if you would gain your Honor Value to its dice pool, gain it twice instead.

Paragon of Bushido - Rei

Cost: 7
You have closely aligned yourself with the virtue of Courtesy and Respect. Whenever you gain honor from an act associated with Rei, gain +0.1 additional honor. When testing or contesting Etiquette in order to avoid embarrassment for yourself or another friendly character, gain +2k0.

Paragon of Bushido - Yuu

Cost: 7
You have closely aligned yourself with the virtue of Courage and Heroism. Whenever you gain honor from an act associated with Yuu, gain +0.1 additional honor. When making any test or contest to resist a fear effect, gain +1k1. Once each Readying Phase, if you are under a fear effect, you may reattempt the original test or contest (using the aggressor's previous result in the case of a contest). If you succeed, the effect ends.

Precise Memory

Cost: 3
Your mind is as an iron cage. You can recall events and conversation you witnessed within the past 3 days without flaw. When testing Intelligence to recall an event or conversation you witnessed, gain +1k1.

Virtuous

Cost: 3
The quality of your character is head and shoulders above your school peers. Gain +1.0 Honor.

Way of the Land

Cost: 2
You've lived in a place so long, it's as the back of your hand. When you gain this Advantage, choose any city or sub-provincial region. Unless under extremely unusual circumstances (GM's discretion), you are able to remember details about this location and navigate it flawlessly.

When purchasing this Advantage, Yorukuusai gain a discount of 1.
When purchasing this Advantage, if you have the Territory Advantage, and that territory includes the city or region chosen, gain a discount of 1.

Your marriage, whether arranged or not, is especially harmonious, and perhaps even blessed. You may purchase these advantages with a discount of 2: Social Position, Territory, Wealth, and Kharmic Tie so long as the target of the advantage is your spouse.

Darling of the Court

Cost: 2
Select one court: when this court is in session, your Status counts as one Rank higher while you are in attendance at this court. You may purchase this advantage more than once, for a different court each time.

When purchasing this advantage, Miyabito characters gain a discount of 1.

Different School

Cost: 0
Due to some agreement, likely made before your character's birth, you were enrolled into a school from another Clan. You may select a starting School from a Clan other than your own; you remain a member of your own clan. While this Advantage does not cost any XP, when taking it you must also take a 3XP Obligation Disadvantage linked to the Clan of your School; this Obligation does not grant you any XP.

(Characters from Lesser Clans in a Strong Alliance may be trained in their ally's schools freely and do not require this advantage)

Fame

Your character was involved in an important event even before this story began, and is better known because of it.

Heartless

Cost: 4
Gain +1k0 to all contests made to resist Coercion, Courtier, Sincerity, for the purpose of persuading you, seducing you, or otherwise changing your mind.

Hero of the People

Cost: 2
You are renowned among the lesser folk as a great protector. Non-samurai citizens that recognize you are inherently friendly toward you and will help you when they can, so long as you live up to your reputation. Non-samurai from your province automatically recognize you. The Target Number for non-samurai citizens of the Empire to identify you is reduced by 25.

Imperial Spouse

Cost: 5
A samurai of Imperial families has been arranged to leave their family and become your spouse, a privilege taken very seriously. Gain +0.5 status. When testing or contesting a [Social] skill against a non-hostile Samurai of the Imperial Families, gain +1k1 (GM's discretion).

Irreproachable

Cost: 3
It is one thing for a samurai to resist temptation, it is another to make would-be tempters doubt their own efforts. When making a contest to resist Coercion(Bribery), the tempter suffers a malus of -Xk0, where X is half the difference in your Honor Values.

When purchasing this advantage, Imperial Family characters gain a discount of 1.

Leadership

Cost: 6
You carry the virtue of coordination with you, wherever it is you might go. Once per Round during the Readying stage, you may choose an ally and test 1k1+School Rank. If you do, add the result to that character's Initiative until the start of the next Readying stage. A character may only be targeted by this Advantage once per round.

When purchasing this advantage, Hōkiba characters gain a discount of 1.

Perceived Honor

Cost: 2/4/6
Despite your true nature, you carry yourself convincingly as an honorable samurai.

2 - When another character would learn your Honor Value through some effect, it is considered to be 1.5 higher.
4 - When another character would learn your Honor Value through some effect, it is considered to be 2.7 higher.
6 - When another character would learn your Honor Value through some effect, it is considered to be 3.9 higher.

Sacred Weapon

Cost: 6
Whether granted to you in recognition of some great deed or inherited from an illustrious ancestor, you bear one of the sacred weapons of your Clan. To possess such a treasure is a great honor, and guarding it is as great a duty as bearing it well.

By some circumstance, you have entered the good graces of the Imperial Families enough that they extend your protections to you… at least, for now. So long as your Honor Value is at least 6, and you remain in the law's good graces (GM's discretion), this Advantage is active. While this Advantage is active, all martial action initiated against you is a Dire breach of etiquette. While this Advantage is active, characters with Honor 5 or higher may not attack you unless they first choose to voluntarily lower their Honor Value to 4.9.

Servant

Cost: X
A non-samurai trained in some specialization has been instructed to follow you. The servant is of the non-samurai caste of your choosing. When you gain this advantage, choose a non-military skill. The servant has 2 in all traits and X ranks in the chosen skill. Your servant will serve you faithfully, but may be prone to cowardice and other such temptations, as the dishonorable folk are oft to be.

When purchasing this advantage, gain a discount of 2 if you have the Bakehanzaki’s Torpor Disadvantage.

Bakeneko’s Sight

Cost: 5
A distant and mischievous ancestor’s blood is strong in you, letting your vision pierce the gloom of night. So long as there is even the faintest light, you can see in natural darkness without penalty.

When purchasing this advantage, gain a discount of 2 if you have the Bakeneko’s Impatience Disadvantage.

Dragon's Blood

[Heritage]
Cost: 6
Your bloodline has been blessed by one of the many elemental dragons, giving you a peculiar elemental affinity and making the kami hesitant to oppose you. When you gain this advantage, choose one element. When making a non-spellcasting, non-skill test or contest that uses that element's ring, gain +1k1.

As a Free Action you may activate or deactivate this Advantage. While this Advantage is active, all spellcasting tests made for spells that include you as a target or target an area you occupy suffer a malus of -10.

Jorōgumo’s Facade

Cost: 5
A distant and subtle ancestor’s blood is strong in you, masking your movements and your true nature. Gain +2k0 to Stealth and Acting tests and contests.

When purchasing this advantage, gain a discount of 2 if you have the Jorōgumo’s Hunger Disadvantage.

Kenku’s Grace

[Heritage]
Cost: 6
A distant and refined ancestor’s blood is strong in you, giving you an air of effortless grace. Gain +1k0 on Agility tests and contests. When falling, suffer -1k1 wounds.

When purchasing this advantage, gain a discount of 2 if you have the Kenku’s Arrogance Disadvantage.

Ningyo’s Breath

Cost: 5
A distant and aquatic ancestor’s blood is strong in you, granting you a ningyo’s love of the water. You may breathe underwater, and swim as fast as your normal walking speed.

When purchasing this advantage, gain a discount of 2 if you have the Ningyo’s Skin Disadvantage.

Noble Bloodline

Cost: 8
You were born into a more prestigious bloodline than most. Gain 0.5 Status, and your starting Blood Potency is 8.0. (At Blood Potency 8, your default Raise Limit is Void + 1 instead of Void)

You may not gain the Fallen Bloodline disadvantage.

Oni's Strength

[Heritage]
Cost: 5
A distant and wild ancestor’s blood is strong in you, bolstering you with the strength and ferocious aspect of an oni. Gain +2k0 to Coercion (Intimidation) tests and contests. When testing or contesting Athletics / Strength, your dice explode on 9 as well as 10.

When purchasing this advantage, gain a discount of 2 if you have the Oni’s Appetite Disadvantage.

Spiritual Advantages

Ancestral Guidance

Cost: 6
The voices of your ancestors guide you, aiding your efforts. Once per session, select one Skill granted by your School. Until the end of the session, you gain a bonus of +1k0 on all tests and contests made using that Skill.

Dreams of Past Lives

Cost: 4
You are unusually connected to your own past lives, and memories of those lifetimes cradle you while you sleep, sowing your dreams with insight. When sleeping, you require only four hours of rest to recover Void Points.

Elemental Font

Cost: 5
Your chi of one element is overactive, but somehow at no detriment to your well being. When you gain this Advantage, choose one element. When making a non-spellcasting, non-skill test or contest with a trait associated with that element, gain a Free Raise. Once per session, when making a test or contest with a trait associated with that element, you may gain a Free Raise.

When purchasing this advantage, if the element chosen is Water, increase the cost by 1.

Friendly Kami

Cost: 5
Only Onmyōji may purchase this Advantage. When you gain this Advantage, choose one Element. Gain +1k1 on spellcasting tests to cast Entreat with that Element. The Element you choose may not be one in which you are Deficient.

Great Destiny

Cost: 5
Fate has some grand plan for you. Once per session, when you would suffer Wounds that would kill you, your total Wounds instead become X, where X is equal to your Dead Threshold-1.

Great Potential

Cost: 5
You seemingly posses no upper limit in your area of expertise. When you gain this Advantage, choose one Skill. When you make Raises using that Skill, your Raises are limited by the higher of your Void Ring and your ranks in that Skill. You may buy Rank 11 and Rank 12 in your chosen skill. Your chosen skill gains the following mastery:

12 - When testing or contesting this skill, your dice explode on 9s as well as 10s.

Kharmic Tie

Cost: X
Yours is a soul inexorably bound to another. When you gain this Advantage, choose another character. Up to X times a session, while fighting for, fighting with, or fighting in order to protect that character, you may gain +1k1 to any test or contest.

Luck

Cost: 5
You possess some instinct, or perhaps, are watched over by some spirit, that allows you to clutch victory from the jaws of defeat more often than your peers. Once per session you may choose to immediately re-roll any one test or contest you make, keeping the higher result.

Touched by Gashiyōkai

Cost: 5
The hungry dead cling to your spirit, growing fat on the life you take and bolstering you in turn. This blessing may originate from gaki, yorei, gashadokuro, or any similar spirit. When you kill with a melee attack, gain a bonus of X to your Armor Target Number until the end of the encounter, where X is equal to your enemy's Insight Rank + Earth ring. This bonus does not stack with itself. In the event of multiple kills, take the highest bonus.

Touched by Hengeyōkai

Cost: 5
Animal spirits and shapeshifters have blessed you, marking you as kin to their lesser brethren. This blessing may originate from kitsune, bakeneko, mujina, or any similar spirit. Gain +1k0 to Animal Handling tests. Natural animals will not attack you unless you attack them first.

Touched by Kibōyōkai

Cost: 5
Deceitful and mischievous trickster spirits have bestowed some of their own guile upon you. This blessing may originate from kappa, oni magicians, goblins, or any similar spirit. Reroll 1's on Sincerity (Deceit) and Sleight of Hand tests and contests as though you possess the appropriate emphasis. If you already have the emphasis, you instead reroll 1's and 2's.

Divine Advantages

Benten's Blessing

Cost: 5
The Fortune of Beauty has shown you favor. When engaging in polite conversation, she guides your speech in subtle and pleasant ways. Gain +0k1 to all [Social] tests or contests, so long as no one involved is more hostile than a friendly rival (GM's discretion).

When purchasing this Advantage, Sumihane and Negurakori characters gain a discount of 1.

Bishamon's Blessing

Cost: 5
The Fortune of Battle has shown you favor. When pushing your limits, he guides your strikes. While assembling an attack's dice pool, if you spend three or more non-Free Raises, you gain a Free Raise. When testing Strength without a skill, gain +1k0.

When purchasing this Advantage, Akaishi and Hōkiba characters gain a discount of 1.

Daikoku's Blessing

Cost: 4
The Fortune of Wealth has shown you favor. He whispers in your ear how best to keep your coin purse full. While testing or contesting Commerce(Mercantile), gain +1k1.

When purchasing this Advantage, Akaishi and Yorukuusai characters gain a discount of 1.

Ebisu's Blessing

Cost: 4
The Fortune of Fertility has shown you favor. He tells the people of the land of your gentle soul. So long as you observe Compassion (GM's discretion), gain +1k1 to all [Social] tests against non-samurai citizens.

When purchasing this Advantage, Shuhōken and Yorukuusai characters gain a discount of 1.

Fukorokuju's Blessing

Cost: 4
The Fortune of Knowledge has shown you favor. The archives of his mind are on occasion opened to you in your times of need. Once per session, when testing or contesting a [Lore] skill, you may gain +1k1 and ignore the unskilled penalty.

When purchasing this Advantage, Shuhōken and Negurakori characters gain a discount of 1.

Hotei's Blessing

Cost: 4
The Fortune of Luck has shown you favor. With great luck come opportunities you are ready to seize. You win ties in a contest. Once per session, after you are informed of a test or contest's results and outcome (win, lose, success, failure), you may add your Void Rank to your result. If the new result would win or succeed, the outcome changes to accommodate.

When purchasing this Advantage, Hōkiba and Musankumo characters gain a discount of 1.

Inari's Blessing

Cost: 3
The Fortune of Rice has shown you favor. While suffering from Hunger, you may regain Void Points normally, though you still suffer all other effects of the Hunger status.

Jurojin's Blessing

Cost: 4
The Fortune of Longevity has shown you favor. He has deigned to take time from his days to manage your body's spiritual balance. When making a test to resist the onset or effects of poison or disease, gain +2k1.

When purchasing this Advantage, Musankumo and Sumihane characters gain a discount of 1.

Lesser Fortune's Blessing

Cost: 6
You have attracted the attention of some lesser divinity, and they shower you with insight. When you gain this Advantage, choose one skill. When making a non-attack, non-grapple test or contest with that skill, gain +1k1.

Cost: 7
The Vulture-Hearted Lord of the Steppe has made his presence known through you, blessing you with but a fragment of his technique and power. Ezen Yalzarsan demands a ferocity that borders on the dishonorable - at least when fighting against samurai foes. Whenever you kill an opponent, restore Wounds equal to your Earth Value, and add your Air Value to your initiative.
